The origin of the derby is not clearly clear. Legend has it that at the end of the 19th century, a count of the same name from England had difficulty putting on and taking off his shoes. He had a comfortable pair made to his liking that was easy to put on. Today this model with open lacing is called a derby cut.
A classic Derby has 3 and 5 pairs of eyelets and open lacing with two quarters on the front that are not sewn at the front. A short piece of seam – the Derby bar – serves as a reinforcing seam below the eyelets. The derby bow – the curved leather edge of the two side parts – is typical of the classic derby. Stylistically, the Derby is a casual shoe and can also be decorated with flourishes, which gives it a sporty and extravagant look.
The shaft, the insole and the sole are sewn together – in technical terms, sewn through. This design guarantees a long service life and allows wear parts such as the outsole and heel surface to be easily replaced. The Derby is made of fine calf leather, usually with a medium level of softness – supple and delicate. The high leather content ensures perfect air circulation, meaning your feet always stay dry and healthy.
